5 Bars to check out in Bangkok

We are currently living in the day and age whereby mixology bars are starting to get popular and apparent in many countries. The bar scene in Bangkok is booming as well, with loads of bars to check out. On my recent trip to Bangkok, I managed to squeeze in time to check out 5 different bars amidst all that shopping and eating. So, read on and drink up!

J. BOROSKI MIXOLOGY

Just a heads up, this bar might be a bit tricky to find. It's located at a dark alleyway that has no lights but there are some girls clad in red at the entrance into the alley. The best way to find this place is to use google maps and even if you think you're at the wrong place and feel lost, you're not (trust me). Just trust googlemaps and you'll be fine.

The bar is designed by Ashley Sutton. You most probably have seen his designs at Mr Jones' Orphanage which is a famous bakery/cake franchise in Bangkok and at the likes of Iron Fairies, and his latest - Maggie Choo's. Oddly enough, those are the other two bars that I've checked out on this trip as well.

The cabinets behind the bar have beetles on them as knobs that kinda remind me of the flesh-eating beetles in The Mummy movie. I was just chatting with the bartenders and to my surprise/astonishment/horror, the beetles are actually real. I didn't believe it at first, so they actually took out an extra beetle from the cabinet and gave it to me as a gift. THEY ARE REAL GUYS.

This is another of your 'no menu' mixology bars so let the bartenders know your taste preference so they can shake/stir something up for you. Those canisters you see in the photo actually contain certain interesting ingredients including lemongrass, jasmine flowers etc. The bar tools that they are using are super top-notch as well.

Definitely worth checking out

PERFUME FRAGRANCE BAR & RESTAURANT

Located right opposite J. Boroski is Perfume Bar & Restaurant. They serve up a good selection of food as they are essentially a restaurant as well. However, one should not look past their exciting menu of drinks. If you are looking for an interesting concoction and something that catches your attention, here's the place for you.

This is their Movie Date drink consisting of Pop Corned Pampero Blanco Rum, Popcorn Syrup, Popcorn Cream, Popcorn and Cola. Super tasty and fantastic presentation. I've never came across a cocktail that made use of popcorn so this was definitely a first.

Opening Hours: 10am to 1am
Nearest BTS: Thong Lo

IRON FAIRIES

The inspiration for Iron Fairies is actually derived from a fairytale that Ashely Sutton wrote himself. The interior is slightly dark and mysterious and lined with shelves of 'fairy dust' jars. There are a few levels to the bar which you can go exploring on your end but watch your step while you're at it. The bar oozes a very chill vibe which is potentially a great hangout spot for friends.

We did not try the food at the bar but they do serve up burgers and pastas if you are feeling like some grub in the middle of the night. I had their signature drink with a cinnamon toasted marshmallow. I wouldn't say it's my favourite though. There are loads of other drinks listed on the menu so you have quite a variety to choose from.

MAGGIE CHOO'S

If you are pressed for time during your trip in Bangkok and cannot decide which bar to check out first, I would say just head to Maggie Choo's. It is the perfect combination of great drinks, awesome furnishing and wonderful experience. Located at Silom and directly outside Novotel Fenix Silom, you might miss the entrance to the place if you are not observant.

Entering Maggie Choo's through the tiny wooden door is like walking into an old-school Cantonese diner with paper umbrellas adorning the ceiling and Chinese furniture gracing the space.

The bar offers you a wide selection of drinks including this cotton candy one. You are supposed to let the cotton candy soak in the drink to create this really sweet yummy concoction. The bartenders were really nice to give us an extra serving of cotton candy on the side. Cotton candy is definitely starting to get popular in Bangkok. I'm seeing it being creatively used everywhere including in desserts and in cocktails.

There are even swings attached to the ceiling that you could sit on. Well, they are actually meant for the thai girls that saunter around the bar all night to entertain guests. (Don't worry, it's nothing sleazy) We went on a Monday night where there weren't many people but I'm sure this place will be really crowded and popular as a hangout joint on weekend nights.

CLOUD 47

Cloud 47 is a rooftop bar located in Silom, down the road from Maggie Choo's. As its name suggests, the bar is located on level 47, offering you a splendid view of Bangkok's city skyline.

The place is lit with pretty iridescent lights and if you are lucky enough, they will offer you a table closest to the edge of the bar, or simply go on a quiet Monday night where there are bound to be seats aplenty. Cloud 47 is also sheltered with a ceiling, keeping you dry even on a wet rainy day. It also houses an impressive air-conditioned wine cellar storing over 500 wine labels for you to choose from. If you would rather have beer, you will be glad to know that their drinks are very affordable and you definitely do not have to break the bank to enjoy a drink whilst enjoying the amazing cityscape from up up above.
